Les is uniquely qualified for the school board. He brings a set of leadership experiences unmatched by any candidate. As President of Youngstown State University, he managed a $100 million budget with over 1300 employees and 12,500 students. While his accomplishments were many a few experiences listed below are particularly important to his role on the board. He:
- DOWNSIZED university operation eliminating over 130 positions through an early retirement program.
- UPGRADED academic standards and programs, ending with a higher percentage of accredited programs than at Ohio State University, and establishing the University Scholars program which awards more full-ride academic scholarships than athletic scholarships.
- DECENTRALIZED university operations, empowering dean and reducing the number of university-wide committee from eighty to ten.
- BUILT constructive union relations, implementing interest-based bargaining and adding union representation to the leadership team.
- SERVED on numerous community boards, including the Butler Art Museum, Chamber of Commerce, PBS Television, Ronald McDonald House and Western Reserve Hospital.
